NOTE: NOT MY CHARACTERS. BELONG TO GRANITOONS. CLOTHING DESIGNS, TOO.

I swear, I’m a sucker for Sci-Fi furs. I swear to the heavens and heck.

I mean, When first introduced to AstroCat, by British western-style artist Granitoons, ([link]) I thought, “Gee I’d like to translate those characters into Star Fox Style.” I have these extralinear trains of thought that appear to connect two nearly unrelated things on an obscure notion. Some of you have seen that already.

Okay, enough about me being weird, onto the drawing

AstroCat is basically (if I’m interpreting it right,) a “Space Cop,” a stereotypical hero-type who works relentlessly for justice. So relentlessly, that he’s “a big thick,” in Granitoon’s words, ignoring, for example, female advances and such. Most of the girls, he thinks, are interested in the noble business of saving the galaxy…he doesn’t even give a thought that it might be HIM they’re interested in!

Astro’s the one on the right, obviously. He’s supposed to be all black, but without markers or pens, well, I felt that an all-black cat would just be too hard to detail. He ended up as a black and white cat, primarily so you can see his whiskers a bit better. And, so that he’d look less like Panther Caruso. (Instead, looking like Katt Monroe’s dad.) The rest of the detailing is as faithful as possible to Granitoon’s original Drawings, other than the obvious style and proportion changes and the change in the blaster he has holstered. (I could never make those overly toylike/cartoonish guns. Firearms. Serious business.)

Speaking about looking like Katt Monroe, the lovely lady on the right, Lieutenant Ashlyn, almost did. In fact, if I’d colored her pink or black instead of brown, she would’ve BEEN Katt!

Ashlyn is Astro’s first mate (although neither is romantically involved: remember, Astro’s dense!) and his closest ally. She’s a bit of a tomboy, and while she’s serious about her job, she doesn’t live it like Astro does. I tried to make her look a little plainer than she does, I really did, but, damn it, I can’t draw a plain girl to save me. So she’s got broad hips and a narrow waist. I also streamlined the bit of hair on her head, but otherwise I remained faithful…heck, the pose is the same as the one on the reference sheet, if changed to suit the proportions. As I was drawing the lineart, I kept hoping that the coloring would make her look less like Katt, and, thank the Lord, it did.

This was kind of fun, seeing how something changes into a different style…;perhaps I should try turning Fox and Krystal into a more cartoonish style…

Nice work, Jim. You do quite well at pencil shading and depth in your characters. The muscle tone and figure is good for both too.^^
